Leaving Home Going Home The ultimate guide for those considering relocating to Mexico eBook David Ellsworth Reviews

Fortunately I was able to read the edition of this book for free due to 's lending program, because paying anything more for this book would have felt like a rip-off. Having lived in Mexico myself for several years (while visiting the country on business for decades) I highly recommend getting your Mexico information elsewhere. The only reason I'm giving this book two stars instead of one is that there is a small amount of credible information in it.

The book is so poorly written that it deserves a pass just due to the brain damage involved in trying to deal with the grammatical errors and murky thinking, but it's also wildly inaccurate about important matters like residency visa requirements and car importation. The author's strong advice to prospective U.S. citizens to only move to an untouristed part of the country where they'll need fluent Spanish violates the very obvious fact that the single most likely predictor of success or failure as an expat is the presence or absence of a reasonable number of people from one's own culture and language. Very few expats move to Mexico with any kind of Spanish fluency - especially retirees in their 60's or beyond! Mexicans in turn are far too busy working long hours and dealing with their extensive networks of family and friends to have much time for friendships with gringos, who on top of almost never being fluent in their language have almost nothing in common with them in terms of background or interests.

Last but not least, what little sound advice there is in this book is found only in minute doses amidst innumerable semi-coherent rants about how awful the U.S. is, impending doom in the U.S. economy and quotations from fringe "alternative news" sites.

Fortunately there are plenty of other good books on relocating to Mexico, as well as expat-run web boards in places like Lake Chapala and San Miguel de Allende - the communities any expat who isn't already full capable of and interested in "going native" should consider for their initial home base in this wonderful country.
