Mr. Clements' ACT & SAT books are worth the small investment required. It is certainly cheaper than taking the test another time because you didn't understand what the graders were looking for.

I emailed the author after I learned that the format of the ACT essay was changed, and he said he has a new Killer ACT essay book coming out soon (in September 2015.) So I recommend waiting for that to come out. My son used his Killer SAT essay book several years ago and scored an 11 out a possible 12 on the SAT essay, and he's never done much writing. (I homeschooled him and neither he nor I really liked writing, so we didn't do a lot of it.)
So I'm guessing the new book will be just as helpful.
This book is excellent!
This was a great purchase. My son raised his writing score from a 5 to a 10. He read the book in one day, it really clicked with him and he was able to organize his thoughts quickly so he could complete the task in the time allowed.
Good advice on essay strategies. I think it helped my kids. Practicing is the real key here.
As the saying goes, there is no standardized test for creativity or determination. But as this excellent book proves, if you are determined to get the highest score on your standardized test, then use the creativity this book demonstrates on understanding the different parts to the essay rubric and then practice with determination the exercises that this books encourages students to do.
I like the visual nature of the book. The T chart for organizing the essay is very good for visual learners for example.
Let me say as a parent that learning how the ACT scoring rubric works (and how the essays are read) was worth the price of the book to me. Learning that ACT prep is focused on teaching a student to write to the rubric seemed both logical and odd. Odd because college preparedness is about learning how to write well in general but the ACT essay is not necessarily writing well generally, but it is writing well to a very specific form. The score is based on a rigid (and very publicly stated) rubric so someone who writes well enough in high school may not actually score as well as someone who writes well to the ACT form. And Tom Clements certainly understands how that form works and explains it well.
My son got a perfect score on the writing portion of the ACT thanks to Tom Clements and his methodology, which probably also helped my son get a 5 on the English AP and do well in his writing courses. The book is concise, fun to read, approachable for all teens. It is a must-buy for college bound students in my opinion. We think my son got a lot more out of it than just a perfect ACT writing score
This book is amazing! It breaks down the task of writing the ACT essay into small bites which is something any high school student will appreciate and benefit from. It’s like reading a well-written, much-tested recipe. Follow it, and you’ll succeed. While Tom's writing style might seem informal, as a college counselor, I believe that high school students will enjoy his humor, fun figurative language and playful tone. I will definitely recommend the book to my clients.
